Variety spoke to Halsey, manager Anthony Li and several collaborators on the For My Last Trick Tour to provide a behind the curtain look into the show.

“I think probably my whole career can probably like be summarized as me trying to have it both ways, all the time,” Halsey admits from a stop along the tour route — describing the dichotomies of “wanting to be big, but also be small… and also wanting to be weird but then also connect with large, vast audiences and make stuff that’s relatable and feels universal. Then, I also want to be theatrical and high-production and high-performance, but I also resent the sterility of that and the box of needing everything to go according to plan. So every creative venture that I get, every fresh canvas for me, is a new opportunity for me to kind of be like, ‘OK, cool. How do I get everything this time?’ You know, famous last words. Obviously, the challenge is trying to do that while always keeping it cohesive, and that was the big challenge with this one.”

Unfortunately, Halsey has had to cancel her show tonight in Bangor, Maine due to losing her voice and needing to be on vocal rest to prevent injury and recover in time for the rest of the For My Last Trick Tour. Halsey said she is devastated but thanked her fans for giving her grace when she needs it.

Here’s the full text Halsey wrote:

I woke up this morning and voice was just.. gone. I saw my doctor and they said singing tonight could cause injury if I don’t let my vocal cords rest.

So-we have to cancel tonight’s show in Bangor.

I’m devastated. There’s nothing that would keep me off of a stage besides not being able to sing. I would try to push through anything else, but this is one of the situations I can’t.

The good news is that with time to rest, doctors have advised I’ll be able to continue the rest of the tour as planned. Canceling tonight is the only way to make sure that happens.

Halsey performed at Northwell at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York on June 1st as part of the For My Last Trick Tour. For the surprise songs, she sang “Castle,” “honey,” and “929” in its tour debut. Halsey changed the lyric “you gotta promise us that you won’t die” to “I’m getting married now.”

Halsey took a moment to talk about how the beginning of pride month is the end of Lupus awareness month and thanked a fan named Ashley, who was in the crowd, for donating her kidney to someone, adding that people like her are heroes and she loves her.
